Showcasing incredible talent of Rick Lobdell
I am an artist living in Nashville, TN. I have an MFA from The Savannah College of Art and Design. Below are my current pieces. Not only do they look great in person but you can also view them with a pair of ChromaDepth 3D glasses. The glasses add more entertainment value to each piece. Buyers receive a couple pairs of glasses with each painting.
Lobdell Universe is Rick's art company. As An artist, he has also engraved a niche in the decorative concrete industry. Rick graduated from the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio with a BA in Fine Art and Philosophy. He then went to Savannah, Georgia where he received an MFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design. While in graduate school, Rick worked construction doing mostly custom tile work. In 2003, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he was introduced to the decorative concrete industry. Within 3 years he took over the company, Concrete Mystique Engraving. Not expecting to enjoy concrete, he quickly turned his new trade into an art form. Currently, Rick is well known worldwide for his decorative concrete designs. He has multiple articles in national magazines, a segment on Tennessee Crossroads and The Concrete Show, and was invited to demonstrate his skills at the 2011, 2012, and 2013 World of Concrete's Artistry in Concrete. He also owns a furniture company called Gallery Mystique.
Over the last 17 years, he has watched this industry change and grow at an amazing rate. In his opinion, the one element that the industry is missing is more true artists. He has used his degree very successfully in a non-traditional setting and feels that it can, and will, be implemented as a norm in decorative concrete in the coming years. Industry professionals are just beginning to realize how to integrate a fully educated artist. Currently, decorative concrete controls most of his artwork. He is constantly finding ways to merge his two different art worlds together.
A Collection of Simple Colors
Color is a simple concept. We see color therefore color exists. Just read each label, memorize a color chart that expands past your creativity and the combinations become endless. We are left with a simple concept, a decision as to which side of the spectrum we feel that moment. We express it. We wear it. We confess in it. Meanwhile we are left standing blinded to the reality of a misunderstood existence. We condemn a gray society focused on the beauty in simple logic.
When I drive, I can spot a cop car a mile away. I can read a street sign farther away than anyone I have ever ridden with. The idea of color seems so clear to me. I believe what my eyes tell me to see even if I know it is not what the rest of the universe sees. If you were to ask me about what colors I use in my paintings I would rarely be right in my answers. Yes I see color but no I do not see like everyone else. Instead I analyze a scientific chart of color. I have stumped eye doctors and confused colleagues.
My recent show is about the journeys Bop and Earl take through Lobdell Universe. They explore the outer reaches of my amusing land. These are my absurd landscapes. It is here that I am trying to grasp the logic of color knowing that a cloud of confusion floats between the canvas and I. This is my collection of simple colors. I enjoy every one of them and take special care deciding on each and every one. So if the concept is simple to you, great explain it to me, I may never get it.
